HOW DO WE INCREASE OUR PERSONAL INSIGHT AND TRANSLATE IT TO HIGH PERFORMANCE?

Increasing personal insight and awareness is central to maximising work engagement and performance. Last Friday registered psychologist Dr Daryl Marchant (pictured below) co-facilitated with me at Keen Edge's Leadership Workshop for MLC in Sydney. Personality assessments were used as a bridge to assist individuals and teams to improve their functionality and ongoing performance. Using personality psychometrics we were able to use best practices to go beyond simply profiling individuals. We humans are so intrigued in understanding ourselves. This testing stimulates our self awareness. which in turn improves functional relationships, develops wellbeing and enhances performance. From workshops like this, the take home message is identifying which intervention the participants could apply in their world to then translate into performance. Our practical workshops are specifically designed and delivered to engage and enlighten groups to drive performance. hashtag#leadershipdevelopment hashtag#personalityassessment hashtag#highperformanceteams hashtag#personaldevelopment hashtag#selfassessment hashtag#psychologicalassessment hashtag#leadership hashtag#teamperformance hashtag#psychologicaltesting hashtag#corporatetraining hashtag#worklifebalance

Calmness and composure, especially in a difficult situation defines equanimity

We can have distractions in our world that seem to conspire against our growth. How can we maintain our calmness and composure when life gets tough?

Last year I was involved in directing a Resilience Program for Teenagers and their Parents to Everest Base Camp, Nepal. There were many times when the environment and terrain became extremely challenging. One of the tools used to combat this adversity on the trip was meditation.

Meditation provided a powerful intervention to minimise distractions and enabled the group to stay focused on the challenges ahead. Many wellbeing strategies were provided for all participants before the trip and throughout the hike. A key aim of the Resilience Program was to enable the participants an opportunity to develop their inner strength and courage so that they could confidently face life's adversities, no matter how insurmountable they may appear.

According to Daniel Goleman the internationally known psychologist, "Wellbeing is a state of being content with things as they are and a major component is equanimity. A form of happiness that is not dependent on external circumstances, on what someone else does or says. It’s an internal state where you’re continuously reminding yourself that you’re okay as you are." To create change we require effort, training and discipline. It takes time.

Goleman further says, "That’s like the mental equivalent of a rep, lifting a weight in the gym. It strengthens that internal circuitry just a little bit and this gives people more cognitive control. When we feel more in control of our inner world, we are less vulnerable to the pulls and the pushes from outside, and so our wellbeing grows. This kind of cognitive practice becomes even more powerful when it’s blended with emotional intelligence." Are you seeking equanimity? Why not start meditating?

You are more resilient than you think

We just recently got back from Everest Base Camp, Nepal. I lead a Resilience Program with Nick Farr taking a group of 26 teenagers and parents. It was impressive to watch how they coped with this amazing journey and built their resilience. Even though some days were tough and they may have felt fragile they maintained resilience. It was like a rhythm, they kept their momentum and did not give up. When we are confronted with challenges it always helps to remind ourselves that 'this too will pass'!

We are taking another group to Nepal again in March 2018. Cant wait! If this is your type of journey check out Resilience for Teens

Resilience For Teens

It was great to partner up with Nick Farr and lead the Resilience for Teens Program to Everest Base Camp in Nepal. We had 26 attendees, parents and their kids achieve getting to Base Camp with 100% success rate. It was a challenging adventure surrounded by beautiful and spectacular scenery. It's journeys like this where real life coaching happens. By far the highlight was achieving it with my daughter, even though I had to carry her on my shoulders. Lol.

Keeping Cool in a Crisis

Keeping Cool in a Crisis

Keeping Cool in a Crisis

How did Dane Swan keep his cool in "I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here"?

When we are exposed to discomfort or fear our natural reactions can activate a cascade of neurological and physiological responses that we have all experienced. The surge of adrenaline is released into our bloodstream and prepares us for a flight or fight response.

Once panic sets in we can experience an elevated heart rate, sweating, trembling, numbness, feeling of choking, shallow breathing, nausea, hot flushes and dizziness.

How do we stop this panic? How do we train ourselves to cope with discomfort? Unfortunately it is not like a light switch where we can turn the panic button off. We can train ourselves to adapt to stressful situations.

Dane Swan who was recently on "I'm a Celebrity Get ME Out of Here" demonstrated how one can combat adversity and remain controlled in what appeared to be a stressful situation that could trigger a panic attack.

Dane attributes his ability to cope with this stressful environment to the trained techniques as an elite athlete during his AFL career. But learning these techniques are not limited to the elite. They can be adopted and used in everyday living.

Fear is normal, but panic can be deadly!

Effective & Authentic Leadership Workshop 7th June

The opportunity to explore Effective and Authentic Leadership with David and Mick, in an intimate group setting was priceless.

Their knowledge base was obviously excellent, but the honesty and engagement with all in attendance was what made the learning experience so valuable.

I look forward to more of my team being able to experience this workshop, so they too can appreciate the tools and learning’s that will guide them to being the most effective Leaders they can be.
