Recently Keen Edge facilitated a 3 day leadership program in the Alpine Snow Region of Victoria with the emerging leaders of Lifeline Australia. The environment, conditions and program were unknown to many of the participants.
The unknown can create trepidation and discomfort for some, particularly when a potential negative outcome can occur. Fear begins to raise its ugly head and pragmatism starts to evaporate. The self doubt can build and divert our ability to remain to the process to the task.
During the 3 day program a specific outdoor leadership activity was delivered to evoke potential fear responses whilst performing under pressure. The aim was to foster effective coaching and communication skills under stress in harsh environments. Considering that majority of participants have never been exposed to snow and the demanding environmental conditions made their task all the more confronting. The task tested their resolve.
In observing their ability to clearly communicate and guide their team through the challenging task, they did it proficiently well. We thought how could they do this so well? Each leader kept to a process, remained calm and nurtured their team throughout the obstacle course successfully as they were experienced outdoor adventure leaders. This was natural to them, as they frequently deal with people on the phone who are experiencing personal crisis..
They are confident in their ability to listen to cues of others and knowing the right questions to ask at the right time. Fundamentally this is crucial in effective coaching and they innately demonstrated effective coaching techniques.
I came away inspired by their efforts and recognised how important a role they play in people who are in need and are in crisis. Their ability to step toward the unknown with courage inspires others and I believe this is what evokes the greatest growth in us.
Move towards the discomfort as this will enable us to adapt and grow. As one of these emerging leaders said to me, “I initially didn't want to do it, but I realised quickly it's not about me here, it's about helping others and guiding them through safely. I envisaged myself being in their shoes.”
